How should Christians respond to the issue of poverty?

Throughout scripture, we see Jesus interacting with those on society's fringes. He fed thousands, healed the sick, and called attention to their struggles. In Matthew 25:40, he emphasizes that whatever we do for the least among us, we do for Him.
