Who was Salome in the Bible and what role did she play in biblical narratives?

She is often identified as the daughter of Herodias and stepdaughter of King Herod Antipas. Salome's most famous and controversial moment comes during a banquet where she dances for King Herod and, at her mother's prompting, requests the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
