In what language did Gabriel speak to Zacharias and Mary in Luke 1?

In the Gospel of Luke, we read about two separate events where the angel Gabriel appears to Zacharias and Mary and delivers messages from God. In both instances, it is not explicitly mentioned in which language Gabriel spoke, leaving many to wonder what language was used.

It is important to note that the language spoken by Gabriel is not a significant factor in the overall message and meaning of the story. However, some biblical scholars have attempted to determine the language used based on historical context and linguistic evidence.

One argument is that Gabriel most likely spoke in Hebrew, as it was the primary language spoken by the Jewish people at the time. Additionally, Hebrew was the language used in the Jewish scriptures and was considered the holy language of the Jewish faith. Therefore, it would make sense for Gabriel to communicate in Hebrew to Zacharias and Mary.

Another argument is that Gabriel may have spoken in Aramaic, which was another common language spoken in the region. Aramaic was the language used in everyday conversations and was often used in the Jewish community. It is possible that Gabriel used Aramaic to communicate with Zacharias and Mary, as it would have been a more practical language for everyday communication.

It is also possible that Gabriel spoke in the language that Zacharias and Mary were most comfortable with. Zacharias was a priest and may have been more familiar with Hebrew, while Mary was from Galilee and may have been more fluent in Aramaic.
