Who is a good shepherd according to the Bible

A good shepherd lays down his life for the flock.

He is differentiated from a hired help in that when trouble arises, the hired help runs away without caring for the sheep.

Jesus compared himself to a good shepherd in John 10:14 stating that he is willing to lay down his life for mankind.
