What is a signet ring in the Bible?

One of the earliest references to a signet ring in the Bible is found in the book of Genesis, where Pharaoh bestows his signet ring upon Joseph as a symbol of his authority and power. In Genesis 41:42, Pharaoh says to Joseph, "I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt," and then removes his signet ring and places it on Joseph's finger, signifying his new role as second in command.

In the book of Esther, King Xerxes also uses his signet ring to affirm royal decrees and grant authority to others. In Esther 8:8, it is written, "Write in the king's name whatever seems best to you, and seal it with the king's signet ring. No document written in the king's name and sealed with his ring can be revoked."

In the Psalms, God's covenant with King David is described as being as enduring as a signet ring. In the book of Haggai, the prophet speaks of Zerubbabel as the chosen signet ring of God, symbolizing his role in the restoration of Israel. In Haggai 2:23, it says, "'On that day,' declares the Lord Almighty, 'I will take you, my servant Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,' declares the Lord, 'and I will make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you.'"
