Why are 40 days so important in the Bible?

Moses' experience on Mount Sinai also highlights the significance of the number 40. In Exodus 24:18, Moses ascends the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments from God. He remains there for a total of 40 days and 40 nights, during which he engages in direct communion with God.
