What is the story of the road to Emmaus in the Bible?

As the two disciples walk and discuss, a stranger joins them on the road. Luke tells readers immediately that this is Jesus, but "their eyes were kept from recognizing him" (Luke 24:16, ESV). This narrative device creates dramatic irony: the audience knows the truth, but the characters do not.
