What is the significance of Bethel in the Bible?

Jacob's encounter with God prompted him to set up a pillar of stone and anoint it with oil, establishing it as a sacred site (Genesis 28:18). Later, in Genesis 35:1-15, God commands Jacob to return to Bethel and build an altar there, solidifying its place as a site of worship in Israel.
