In 597 BCE, after a rebellion by King Jehoiakim, Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem, deposed Jehoiakim’s successor Jehoiachin, and took thousands of the elite—including members of the royal family, priests, and skilled workers—into captivity in Babylon.
