What caused King Saul's mental illness in the Bible's account of him as king of Israel?

On multiple occasions, Saul failed to follow God's commands and acted out of his own impatience and fear. For example, in one instance, Saul offered a burnt sacrifice to God, a duty reserved for the prophet Samuel.
