Christian Athletes and Entertainers Reshape Cultural Landscape Through Public Faith
By more than a three-to-one margin, Americans believe professional sports players have more influence on society than do faith leaders. Overall, about two-thirds of Americans (64%) say they think pro athletes have more influence in American society today than do professional faith leaders (19%).
Christian influence in sports is experiencing unprecedented visibility as athletes increasingly use their platforms to share their faith. A recent survey by communications firm Pinkston found that 78% of survey respondents said an athlete's personal character influences their perception of them, while 60% of survey respondents engage with sports teams or athletes on social media.
Faith in sports is not a new phenomenon. Throughout history, some of the most legendary athletes have openly discussed their beliefs. From Olympic runner Eric Liddell, who famously refused to race on a Sunday due to his Christian convictions, to modern icons like Tim Tebow, who popularized his prayerful celebration, faith has long held a presence in major athletics.
Modern Athletes Leading by Example
Today's Christian athletes are using social media to unprecedented effect. Stephen Curry, a six-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA champion, is described as "a devout Christian who has made it a major part" of his identity, while golfer Scottie Scheffler, the 2024 Masters Champion, is vocal about "leaning on his faith, giving credit to God for his success on and off the green".
Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is another Christian pro-athlete who glorifies God and points to his faith throughout his football career. He thanks the Lord in the press and boldly shares his walk with fans. Other notable athletes include surfer Bethany Hamilton, who has used her platform to share faith after losing her arm in a shark attack, and baseball pitcher Kyle Gibson, who credits a high school injury with deepening his relationship with Christ.
Research Shows Athletes' Growing Influence
Barna Group research shows most Americans believe sports figures have a greater influence than do professional clergy or other faith leaders. By more than a three-to-one margin, Americans believe professional sports players have more influence on society than do faith leaders. Overall, about two-thirds of Americans (64%) say they think pro athletes have more influence in American society today than do professional faith leaders (19%).
Organizations Supporting Athlete Faith
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has announced its 2025 ministry theme: "Glory," based on 2 Corinthians 3:18. Recent FCA statistics show impressive reach: 93,614 people were reached with the Gospel at the organization's annual Fields of Faith events, they distributed 219,444 Bibles, and approximately 115,000 people attended FCA Camps.
Hollywood's Christian Renaissance
The entertainment industry is witnessing a notable shift as more celebrities openly embrace and discuss their faith. Recent high-profile conversions include Russell Brand, who described reaching "a point where the figure, the personage, the presence of Christ became overwhelming, unavoidable, welcome, necessary," and Shia LaBeouf, who was confirmed into the Catholic Church after reportedly being influenced by playing a Franciscan Friar in the 2022 film "Padre Pio".
Established Christian Celebrities Leading Change
Long-established Christian celebrities continue to influence Hollywood culture. Carrie Underwood has been vocal about how her faith helped her through difficult experiences, while actors like Kirk Cameron have dedicated their careers to creating faith-based content. Candace Cameron Bure recently created a new devotional Bible and has been "extremely outspoken about her faith in every public platform she has".
Other notable Christian actors making their mark include Chris Pratt, who faced criticism for his religious beliefs but reflected on scripture, saying "Two thousand years ago, they hated him too," and Mark Wahlberg, who stated his goal is "to utilize my career for good and to do God's work".
Industry Challenges and Opportunities
Despite growing acceptance, challenges remain. Matthew McConaughey revealed witnessing fellow Hollywood professionals struggle with public faith expression, noting "there were people in the crowd that I have prayed with before dinners" who would hesitate to applaud when he thanked God, thinking "this could be a bad thing on my resume".
However, entertainment expert Dan Wakeford notes that "when stars talk about faith in America it often helps connect them to a wider audience. Connectivity is about relatability, and if a celebrity has the same belief system as you, it makes you feel like you know them better".
Digital Platforms Amplify Faith Messages
Social media has transformed how Christian athletes and entertainers share their faith. Today, platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow athletes to share Bible verses, personal testimonies, and reflections in real time. This has led to a stronger sense of community among fans who share their beliefs.
Growing Cultural Impact
The influence of Christian celebrities extends beyond entertainment value. As one survey finding noted, "fans are eager for meaningful engagement beyond the game," and "these findings create an incredible opportunity for athletes to lead with conviction and impact their communities in meaningful ways".
This growing movement represents a significant cultural shift where authentic faith expression is increasingly viewed as genuine leadership rather than career liability, potentially reshaping how Americans view the intersection of celebrity influence and spiritual values.
